If you ever saw or were a fan of the television show “Cheers” it was the one pub where you almost envied the characters for working there. Well, Harry’s in Meridian (on Overland, near the Majestic Cinemas) evokes that same attitude, with its Cheers-like layout, ambiance and friendly staff all wrapped up in a modern package.
The long u-shaped, dark wood bar with tables peppered outside of it, and open dining room provide more than ample seating, without trying to cram every square inch with bodies of furniture. Harry’s has the obligatory flat screens stationed within for sporting events, which every decent bar knows, would cause a riot if their patrons could not watch them. The nice selection of non-eardrum bleeding rock tunes, piped in, also added for a fun choice to rest work weary bones.
The wine and drink menu seemed to be developed to encompass all tastes with standard selections like Beringer White Zinfandel ($4.75 per glass) to La Crema Chardonnay ($8.50 per glass) for the well versed lover of crushed grapes. Loving the movie “Tombstone” I ventured forth and ordered a “Doc Holiday” which consisted of 44 North (Huckleberry Vodka, made in Idaho) and Red Bull. The Red Headed Slut got kicked to the curb, because I drew a daisy with the Doc. Yummy!
Scouring over the food menu I noticed an assortment of burgers (couldn’t pronounce the Hawaiian one), wraps (classic and Portobello), salads, and the traditional appetizers (nachos, wings, and various fried edibles). Not feeling too famished I ordered the Nachos, along with Fried Green Beans.
To my chagrin, ground beef, beans, cheese, tomatoes, along with a scoop each of guacamole and sour cream rested victoriously on top of a gi-normous pile of toasty chips, as if vanquished in a WWF match. Then came the hot, steamy, lightly breaded green beans, which still snapped upon crunching. Dipping sauce? Who knows?! The beans were so good I disregarded the sauce like a Steven Seagal movie.
Though my gullet could take no more fare, I was pleasantly plump again, and wasn’t completely sticker shocked when the bill came. For 4 drinks, 2 huge appetizer plates, plus tip it was around $50.00, though spendy to some, soaking up the atmosphere in a bar still priding itself on getting to know your name, was well worth it.
