If you haven’t had the pleasure of tasting all the flavors of Hawaii don’t wait another day longer! With Ono Hawaiian Café close by at 2170 Broadway Avenue in Boise there’s no reason not to saver island delights! Our personable waiter, born and raised on Oahu, had several suggestions for what to order. Their new fusion menu was printed in the summer of 2009 and the type font is small so be sure to bring reading glasses if needed or ask your server for recommendations. Entrees come with a side of macaroni salad, crispy fried onion strips or stir-fry vegetables. Coconut rice is the default but white or brown rice is also available. Entrees are moderately priced and many can be ordered in half portions.
We selected the “Oahu” ($8) burger on a Maui sweet onion bun; served alongside excellent fries. We shared “Kahana” shredded smoked pork ($6); “Moanalua” panko curried chicken ($5.50) and “Waikiki” nori wrapped ahi ($14) on a bed of pickled cucumbers (cabbage). The coconut rice was very moist but lacked coconut flavor. A side dish of shredded crispy fried onions was unique and decadent! The entrees were all great but the curried chicken was an absolute show stopper! A nice added touch was an orchid flower on each dinner plate.
A pastry chef in Nampa delivers unusual treats to Ono several times a week. Look for the pastry case full of calories: an éclair in the shape of a ukulele; rainbow cake and the rich chocolate cake we sampled with thick white cream on the top. The only downfall was an $8 price tag.
On Friday there’s all-you-can-eat Aloha Friday buffet! Lunch buffet is served from 11 to 3, $12; dinner buffet from 6 to 10, $21. Whether enjoyed indoors or on their shaded patio, you’ll experience Hawaiian music and great cuisine. There’s no other restaurant in Idaho quite like Ono!
Ono Hawaiian Café has a web site. It doesn’t list the entire menu but does give an idea of the type of foods they serve: http://www.onocafe.net/
Don’t forget about their Kanak Attack Catering Services. Order Party Packs at least 24 hours in advance for your next tailgate party or have Kanak Attack help you with an authentic Hawaiian luau with live traditional music and hula dancers. http://www.kanakattack.net/
