Located along the busy stretch of Eagle Road near the intersection of Ustick is Famous Dave’s in Meridian. It’s a chain known for ribs, and evidently the first opened in Wisconsin in 1994. Guess Famous Dave felt it was time to pair up with ‘Famous Potatoes’. This is their first Idaho location which opened in August 2008. The décor is “campy”. Rustic booths and wooden tables with faux Pendleton woolen chair coverings provide comfortable seating. All kinds of antique signs and shelves loaded with old fashioned boxes, jars and cans from decades ago. Atop each table sits a large roll of paper towels and a rack of interesting sauces such as Rich & Sassy, Devil’s Spit and Georgia Mustard.

The lunch menu is a bit limited, “Same great taste, just smaller portions of a few of our favorites served up for lunch.” There’s chicken, sausage, catfish, wings, chopped pork, beef brisket, barbecue combo plates, soups, salads and tasty side dishes. It appeared that diners seated all around us were ordering from the dinner menu as the portions were enormous, many served on platters rather than plates.

All meat is cooked medium-well. We ordered a cheeseburger ($7.49) and Cajun chicken burger ($8.99). The cheeseburger was cooked beyond oblivion and while the Cajun chicken had a nice spicy kick to it both meals, including the fries, were too heavily salted for our liking. The accompanying coleslaw and spicy pickles were exceptionally good. To be fair, we should have ordered something different as we have heard from several people that the ribs are really special! Judging from the amount of patrons in the dining room, there’s a big following for Famous Dave’s. While the service is decent and portions are plentiful we felt the $20 lunch tab seemed expensive for a few burgers, no drinks, and no dessert! We’d return to sample the ribs the next time around.

Open daily for lunch and dinner; Sunday through Thursday 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. – midnight.
