This Basque Pub and Eatery was established in 1991 and has become a focal gathering point for many in the community. Saved by the Basque Museum and Cultural Center from demolition by trading parking spaces for a lease, sub-leaser, Dan Ansotegui, did all of the work to make it into the quaint spot it is today. You can find great appetizers, soups, sandwiches and wine there and an atmosphere that welcome's all to the Basque Block.

Excuse the text lingo...but this place is awesome! I used to work down on the grove, and when I was hungry, I would coax someone into picking me up a lamb grinder with croquettes. I had never had such a thing as croquettes until late last year, but oh my yummy, this place has the most moist, delicious croquettes. and the lamb grinder, basically a french dip with what seems to be slow roasted lamb meat is off the hook, incomparably, incredibly amazing! I can't think of anything (other than hawaiian food) that I crave more! try this place if you've never had basque, it was a great place to be introduced to basque food. I think I'm going to go there now!

Dear Prospective Pubster,

I knew a Basque guy back in grad school: John. Nice guy. Not "savage" at all, like Edward Abby said.

We dropped into Gernika Pub for a couple pints back in Jan 2010. Really nice bar seating. Happy waiters. But 4 stars?

My old climbing buddy, Brian, who made up his own difficulty rating system (5.12s were "expect chaffing") would probably say that Gernika Pub was "appropriately coastered" or "lamby", but not "el quattro". Not many get that award. I'd listen to old Brian. Stop by Gernika sometime, see what's up. But keep your lamb sammy to your hammy little mammy.
