If you were an old-time Boise resident, as my husband and I are, you are probably aware that the Torch Café was famous for inventing and serving the best finger steaks you could buy anywhere. You also probably know that you can no longer buy those finger steaks. “CHRIS THE SALADMAN” had a booth at the Western Idaho Fair for 13 years but decided to sell his food truck this year and open a restaurant at 1716 S. Broadway in Boise. For some unknown reason, we had never stopped at his fair booth. We recently purchased coupons to Chris’s from the Statesman and were extremely pleased when we made our first visit. Chris prepares from scratch his own finger steaks which far surpass the quality and flavor of those famous Torch finger steaks. “CHRIS THE SALADMAN” marinades steaks in his secret sauce for 72 hours before serving them. Once you place your order, he weighs the steak (either a half pound or a pound), dips it in a light and airy batter, and serves it with hand cut french fries (not frozen), his own great coleslaw mixture, an excellent steak dipping sauce with a hint of horseradish, and excellent fry sauce. THE FINGER STEAKS LITERALLY MELT IN YOUR MOUTH! My husband and I are both in our 60’s and have never had finger steaks this good – not even at the Torch Café! We also shared a superb crab Louie and shrimp (blend) salad which was served in a large spinach wrap. We have a bad history with “blended” crab/shrimp at other restaurants so, before ordering, we asked if they use fake crab. Chris uses KING CRAB LEGS in his blend – none of the fake stuff! His menu also includes many unique salads and wraps, sandwiches, and burgers which we cannot wait to try. And, Chris has priced his menu very reasonable so that you can afford to eat there often – and you will want to after your first visit. I know we’ll return often!
